How to play Snake
- Pick a mode and a speed, then press Play.
- Steer with the arrow keys, W A S D, a swipe, or the arrow pad.
- Eat the red fruit to grow. Don’t crash into walls, blocks or your own tail.
- The snake speeds up a little with every fruit — stay sharp.
Tips for a higher score
- Keep the combo alive. A x5 combo makes each fruit worth five times as much. Plan a short route to the next fruit instead of circling.
- Hug the edges early. While the snake is short, sweeping along the walls keeps the middle open for later.
- Use portals in Portal and Maze. Going off one edge is often the shortest path to a fruit on the other side.
- You can follow your tail. Moving into the square your tail is leaving is safe, which is handy when you are boxed in.
- Queue your turns. Quick double taps like Up then Right are remembered, so tight U-turns are possible even at high speed.
About this version
Snake is one of the oldest arcade ideas around: a line that grows each time it eats and must never run into itself. This version adds a few twists of our own — a combo multiplier that rewards speed, golden gems on a timer, and three board types — while keeping the controls as simple as ever. It runs entirely in your browser with no download, so it works on school Chromebooks, phones and desktops alike.
Frequently asked questions
How do I control the snake?
Use the arrow keys or W A S D on a keyboard. On a phone or tablet, swipe on the board or use the on-screen arrow pad. Press Space or P to pause.
How does the combo multiplier work?
Eat the next fruit before the yellow bar at the bottom of the board runs out and your multiplier goes up, to a maximum of x5. Every fruit is worth 10 points times your multiplier, so fast routes score far more than slow ones.
What are the golden gems?
Every fifth fruit spawns a golden gem with a countdown ring around it. The faster you reach it, the more points it gives, and it also makes your snake two segments longer. If the ring empties, the gem disappears.
What is the difference between Classic, Portal and Maze?
In Classic the edges of the board are walls. In Portal you can leave one side of the board and come back on the opposite side. Maze also lets you pass through the edges but adds solid blocks in the corners and middle that you must steer around.
Is my high score saved?
Yes. Your best score for each mode and speed is saved in this browser. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
